Chapter 6 - The Two-Year Lie

Two years ago, David had been on a critical business trip in London. He had received a hysterical, sobbing phone call from Sarah. She claimed that eight-year-old Mia had unlatched the back gate, wandered into the dense, sprawling woods behind their estate, and simply disappeared.
David had flown home immediately. He had spent millions of dollars on private investigators, helicopters, and search dogs. The police dragged the nearby lake. They scoured the state for months. But they found absolutely nothing.
David had nearly drank himself to death in the crushing, suffocating agony of losing his little girl. He had attended grief counseling, clinging to his new wife and their younger daughter, Lily, just to survive the nightmare.
And for two entire years, while David wept in the master bedroom, his daughter had been locked in a soundproof utility closet less than fifty feet away from where he slept.
She hadn't been kidnapped by a stranger. She hadn't wandered into the woods.
David stared at Mia’s trembling, malnourished frame. He looked at the empty food wrappers scattered around her—the cheap, processed garbage someone had tossed into the dark just to keep her alive.
