Chapter 2 - Why I Brought Emma to That Wedding at All

If you had asked me that morning why I even set foot on that beach, I would have told you one thing:
Closure.
That was the lie I had been telling myself.
The truth was far uglier.
Gregory Vale had once been the most reckless mistake of my life. Seven years earlier, before Emma was born, he had pursued me hard—flowers, promises, late-night phone calls, whispered plans about a future together. He knew exactly how to make a woman believe she was loved.
And then I got pregnant.
That was when everything changed.
His calls became shorter. His promises turned vague. He started talking about timing, family pressure, and complications. A month later, he stopped answering altogether. By the time Emma was born, Gregory had vanished behind lawyers, assistants, and silence.
My father had wanted to destroy him.
He probably could have.
But I had just given birth, and all I cared about was surviving the humiliation and protecting my baby.
For seven years, I raised Emma without Gregory. My father became the steady male presence in her life. He was the one who held her when she had nightmares, walked her to school on her first day, and showed up every time she asked for him.
That was why, when Emma cried “Grandpa” on that beach, it was his name she called—not Gregory’s.
So why did we go to the wedding?
Because three days earlier, a formal envelope had arrived at my apartment.
Inside was a handwritten note in Gregory’s unmistakable script:
Bring Emma. We need to settle this before it becomes public.
There was no apology.
No acknowledgment.
Just that.
And against my better judgment, I went.

Because after seven years of being ignored, I wanted to know what exactly Gregory was so afraid of.
