Chapter 7 - Emma Asked Me the Question I Couldn’t Avoid Anymore

That evening, Emma climbed into my bed wearing one of my old T-shirts and asked if she could sleep there.

I said yes before she even finished asking.

She curled against me, quiet for a while, then touched the faint scratch on her arm where the scissors had grazed her.

“Mom?”

“Yes, baby?”

“Why did that lady hate my dress so much?”

There is no easy answer when a child asks you why an adult was cruel to her.

So I told her the simplest truth first.

“Because she was angry, and angry people sometimes do ugly things.”

Emma was quiet again.

Then she asked the harder one.

“Is Gregory my dad?”

I could feel my whole body go still.

Across the room, my father looked up from the chair where he had been pretending to read.

I could have delayed.

I could have deflected.

But I had spent too many years protecting adults from the truth.

So I kissed her forehead and said, “Yes. He is.”

Emma didn’t cry.

She just looked confused.

“Then why doesn’t he act like Grandpa?”

That question broke something in me.

Because there was no excuse I could give that wouldn’t still be a lie.

So I answered honestly.

“Because being a father by blood and being a father by heart are not always the same thing.”

She thought about that, then nodded once.

Finally, she whispered, “I’m glad Grandpa came.”

I held her tighter.

“So am I.”

She fell asleep not long after that.

But I stayed awake, staring into the dark, knowing that from that point on, this wasn’t only about proving what Gregory had hidden.

It was about deciding what Emma deserved to know—and what kind of place, if any, Gregory would ever have in her life.
