Chapter 5 - Gregory Came to My Father’s House at Midnight

He came alone.

No tuxedo.

No bride.

No arrogance.

Just Gregory in dark clothes, standing in my father’s driveway a little after midnight, looking like a man who had watched his life crack open in real time.

I didn’t want to see him.

My father did.

He made Gregory wait in the study while he poured himself a drink and let the silence work on him. I stood near the doorway listening.

Gregory didn’t waste time.

“Where is the strip?”

My father didn’t answer right away.

Instead, he asked, “Do you mean the one your bride cut off my granddaughter’s dress?”

Gregory dragged a hand over his face. “You don’t understand what that is.”

“No,” my father said calmly. “I think I finally do.”

For the first time in all the years I had known Gregory, I heard fear in his voice.

“If that reaches the trustees before I speak to them, everything freezes.”

That was when my father leaned back and looked at him with quiet disgust.

“Everything?” he repeated. “You mean the beach property? The family holding company? The inheritance schedule? Or the story you’ve been selling that you don’t have a daughter?”

Gregory’s face tightened.

He knew he had said too much.

My father’s tone went colder.

“So Emma is your daughter.”

Gregory didn’t answer with words.

He didn’t need to.

The silence did it for him.

My father stood and walked to the door.

“You hid a child for seven years,” he said. “You let that woman put scissors on her. And now you’re here because you’re afraid of losing money.”

Then he opened the study door and said the only thing Gregory deserved to hear.

May you like

“Get out.”
