Chapter 10 - The Empty Bag Belonged to the Child Claire Was Losing

The bag with Lily’s name stayed with me.
It bothered me more than the cash.
More than the passports.
More than the burner phone.
Because it was empty.
Originally, Claire packed it.
Then Lily unpacked it herself after learning I wasn’t coming.
She removed every piece of clothing.
Placed them back in her drawers.
Took out the stuffed rabbit.
Then hid her passport behind a row of books.
That was why the passport sleeve in the cellar was empty.
My six-year-old daughter had quietly sabotaged the departure.
One sock at a time.
One shirt at a time.
When investigators asked why, Lily said:
“I wasn’t going without Daddy.”
That answer devastated Claire.
For months, Julian had been telling her the children needed rescuing from me.
But the first child old enough to understand what was happening did not feel rescued.
She felt kidnapped from her father.
That did not automatically prove I was the better parent.
Children can love unsafe parents too.
But every independent review found the same thing:
No evidence supported the fictional custody campaign Julian invented.
No secret legal file.
No plan to institutionalize Claire.
No effort to remove the children.

The threat Claire had been running from existed almost entirely on Julian’s phone.
