Chapter 5 - Claire Said She Was Running From Me

At the police station, Claire finally explained.
At least, she explained the version she believed.
She had been planning to leave me for almost three months.
Not because of another man.
Not because she wanted money.
She said she believed I was preparing to take both children away from her.
I stared at her.
“Why would you think that?”
She looked at Julian.
That answer came before the words.
Julian had been showing her messages.
Emails.
Screenshots.
Private conversations he claimed came from people inside my company and legal team.
According to those messages, I had been consulting a custody attorney.
Building a file about Claire.
Documenting what I supposedly called her “instability.”
Planning to file for emergency temporary custody immediately after confronting her.
None of it sounded familiar.
Because I had never done it.
Claire didn’t believe me.
Not yet.
She said:
“You told someone I was becoming unpredictable.”
“No.”
“I saw it.”
“You saw a screenshot.”
Her expression changed slightly.
I continued:
“Did you ever see the original email?”
Silence.
“Did you ever speak to the attorney whose name was attached?”
“No.”
“Did you ever ask me?”
Her eyes filled with anger.
“Julian said if I confronted you, you’d move faster.”
There it was.
For three months, my wife had been making life-changing decisions based on information supplied almost entirely by one person.
May you like
Julian.
