Chapter 4 - Lily Was the Reason the Plan Began Falling Apart
Claire took Lily upstairs.
Told her to calm down.
Told her nobody was kidnapping anyone.
“We’re going somewhere peaceful for a while.”
Lily asked:
“Why can’t Daddy come?”
Claire wouldn’t answer.
Then Lily did the most important thing anybody did that day.
She pretended to accept the explanation.
She waited.
Claire left the bedroom.
Julian was downstairs.
Lily found the old tablet she used for cartoons.
It still connected to the house Wi-Fi.
She could not remember my phone number.
But she knew how to call her grandmother through the family contact screen.
Instead, she accidentally reached the emergency-call menu.
A dispatcher eventually received enough information to understand that a frightened child believed her baby brother had been locked behind a chained door.
Police were sent to the house.
At nearly the same time, Lily’s grandmother called me.
I left the conference immediately.
Officer Davis met me at the property because the situation involved children, a locked interior space, and conflicting information from adults.
That was how I entered the house with police already beside me.
Claire’s plan had depended on controlling the timing.
Lily destroyed that advantage.
Not by overpowering anyone.
Not by understanding custody law.
By refusing to accept an explanation that contradicted what she could hear with her own ears.
The baby was behind the cellar door.
Her mother said he wasn’t.
