Chapter 14 - Claire’s Relationship With the Children Had to Be Rebuilt Without Me Pretending Nothing Happened

Claire and I separated.

Immediately.

The marriage did not survive the cellar.

Not because I suddenly believed she had always been evil.

She hadn’t.

That would have made the story simpler.

Claire had been exhausted, resentful, frightened, manipulated—and then made choices that endangered trust and terrified our daughter.

Both things were true.

Her contact with the children became supervised at first while professionals evaluated what happened.

The first time Lily saw her again, Claire cried.

Lily didn’t.

Claire began:

“Mommy thought—”

The therapist stopped her.

“No explanations first.”

Claire nodded.

Then looked at Lily.

“I lied to you about where your brother was.”

Lily watched her carefully.

“I locked the door.”

Another nod.

“I scared you.”

Lily finally answered.

“Yes.”

Claire’s face crumpled.

“I’m sorry.”

Lily did not say she forgave her.

Nobody made her.

Repair began with Claire accepting that apology was not a shortcut back to trust.

It was only the first honest sentence after months of lies.
