Chapter 6 - Julian Had Made Himself Indispensable Before He Made Me Dangerous
Julian had known Claire since college.
He described himself as her oldest friend.
I had never liked him much.
But disliking someone isn’t evidence.
For years, he appeared occasionally.
Birthdays.
Holiday parties.
Fundraisers.
Then after our son was born, he became more present.
Claire was exhausted.
The baby slept badly.
I worked too much.
Those facts were true.
Julian listened.
That mattered.
When Claire complained that I missed dinner, Julian said:
“You deserve more support.”
When we argued over schedules:
“Marcus always has to control the plan.”
When I suggested hiring additional childcare:
“He wants strangers raising your children.”
Nothing dramatic at first.
Interpretations.
Small reframings.
Then Julian began sending Claire things “people had forwarded him.”
A message supposedly from one of my assistants:
Marcus says Claire is getting impossible since the baby.
Fake.
An alleged email between me and a family attorney:
I need to understand options if a parent becomes emotionally unreliable.
Fake.
A cropped calendar entry supposedly showing a custody consultation.
Also fake.
Julian never produced original accounts.
He produced screenshots.
And Claire—tired, isolated, already unhappy with how absent I had become—believed them.
Because the lies were built around one truth.
I had not been present enough.
