Chapter 13 - Mireya Stopped Saying “I Can’t Breathe” Because She Thought Nobody Believed Her

For weeks after the wedding, Mireya became strangely quiet when symptoms started.

That frightened Margaret more than crying had.

She would touch her chest.

Look toward an adult.

Then say nothing.

One afternoon Cullen noticed.

Her breathing had become shallow.

“Mireya?”

She shook her head.

“Does your chest feel funny?”

Another shake.

But her eyes filled with tears.

Cullen knelt.

“You never get in trouble for telling me you can’t breathe.”

She whispered:

“Tove said drama.”

Cullen closed his eyes briefly.

Then opened the medical bag.

“We listen first.”

That became the new family rule.

Not panic first.

Not treatment blindly without following the physician’s plan.

Listen.

Observe.

Treat according to instructions.

Ask questions afterward.

Mireya slowly relearned that saying something hurt or felt wrong would not be treated like a performance.
