Chapter 9 - The Clinic Records Showed Tove Had Changed the Story After Every Appointment

Cullen requested Mireya’s recent medical records.
The pattern became even clearer.
At appointments, the pulmonologist documented genuine respiratory symptoms.
Tove’s summaries afterward were different.
Doctor:
Continue preventive treatment consistently.
Tove to Cullen:
Doctor agrees anxiety is a major factor.
Doctor:
Crying may worsen symptoms but does not explain the underlying airway response.
Tove:
He thinks she works herself up.
Doctor:
Do not withhold rescue treatment while assessing behavioral triggers.
Tove:
We need to stop rewarding every episode.
She was not inventing every sentence from nothing.
That would have been easier to catch.
She took small truths—
crying can worsen breathing,
anxiety can affect symptoms,
routine matters—
and bent them until they supported the conclusion she wanted.
Mireya was not sick.
Mireya was dramatic.
Margaret was enabling her.
Cullen was weak.
