Chapter 14 - Margaret Became Grandma Again Instead of the Family’s Evidence Keeper
For months, Margaret carried copies of everything.
Medical notes.
Logs.
Appointment summaries.
It exhausted her.
She had become part grandmother, part witness, part archivist.
After the immediate investigations ended, Cullen told her:
“You don’t have to document every breath anymore.”
Margaret looked toward Mireya playing nearby.
“I got used to thinking somebody had to prove her.”
Cullen understood.
That was what Tove had done to all of them.
Turned a child’s breathing into an argument requiring evidence.
The new medical routine was simpler.
Electronic medication tracking.
Clear designated caregivers.
Direct physician communication.
No one person interpreting appointments for everyone else.
Most importantly, no adult could unilaterally decide Mireya was “faking” and withhold prescribed treatment.
Margaret finally stopped keeping the notebook in her handbag.
She replaced it with crayons and fruit snacks.
