Chapter 15 - The Next Mask Stayed Where Mireya Could Reach It

One year later, Cullen took Mireya back to the same estate.

Not for another wedding.

For Margaret’s seventieth-birthday lunch.

The reflecting pool was still beside the terrace.

Mireya noticed it immediately.

She was four now.

She walked closer, holding Cullen’s hand.

Then pointed into the water.

“My mask went there.”

Cullen nodded.

“Yeah.”

“Tove threw it.”

“Yes.”

Mireya looked at him.

“You got another one.”

That mattered more.

“Yes.”

The spare medical kit sat on a nearby chair.

Closed.

Ready.

Not hidden.

Not something Mireya had to earn access to.

Margaret joined them carrying her handbag.

Mireya immediately opened it.

“Hey,” Margaret protested.

Mireya pulled out a packet of crackers.

“No papers.”

Margaret laughed.

“No papers.”

Later, pollen from the garden began bothering Mireya.

She coughed twice.

Then stopped playing.

Cullen noticed.

“You okay?”

Mireya touched her chest.

“Mask, please.”

No embarrassment.

No hesitation.

No one asked whether she was faking.

Cullen followed the action plan exactly as her doctor had taught them.

Margaret brought the kit.

Mireya received her treatment.

A few minutes later, her breathing eased.

Then she asked for cake.

Cullen laughed.

“That sounds medically serious.”

Margaret gave him a warning look.

He immediately corrected himself.

“Bad joke.”

Mireya giggled anyway.

The moment was ordinary.

That was what Cullen valued most.

A year earlier, Tove had thrown a breathing mask into the reflecting pool because she believed Mireya’s illness was interfering with the family she wanted.

She had misunderstood what family was.

Mireya was not an obstacle between Cullen and his future.

She was part of it.

Her needs did not make her manipulative.

Her dependence did not make her competition.

And needing help to breathe did not make her dramatic.

Cullen looked across the terrace at the shallow water.

For a second, he remembered the mask sinking.

Tove grabbing Margaret’s handbag.

Chase saying his daughter was faking.

All the adults standing around a three-year-old child debating whether her distress deserved belief.

Then Mireya tugged his sleeve.

“Daddy.”

“Yeah?”

“Cake.”

He smiled.

“Now that emergency I understand.”

She took his hand and pulled him toward the table.

The spare mask remained nearby.

Exactly where it belonged.

Available before anybody needed proof.
