Chapter 1 - BEFORE THE APPLAUSE

Three hours before the gala, Jasper found his mother sitting on the edge of her bed with both hands wrapped around a glass of water she had not touched.

Adeline looked beautiful even when she looked ill. White evening gown. Bare shoulders. Pale skin. Makeup hiding the gray beneath her eyes.

“Are you sure you should go?” Jasper asked.

She smiled without humor. “If I stay home, your father gets to explain why.”

Nathaniel had spent the week telling everyone Adeline had suffered an accidental medication reaction caused by exhaustion. He said she was resting. He said the gala would proceed. He said Sabrina Croft would be “helping” because Adeline was not well enough to handle donor relations.

Then Jasper noticed Adeline’s left hand. No wedding ring.

“What happened to your ring?”

Adeline looked toward the bathroom door before answering. “It’s gone.”

The heirloom bracelet from her grandmother was gone too.

Nathaniel said both pieces were probably misplaced during the hospital stay.

Adeline did not believe him.

Then she told Jasper about the accountant.

A woman from the foundation audit team had called that morning and asked whether Adeline had personally approved a package of transactions totaling sixty-eight million dollars.

Adeline had said no.

The accountant had gone silent.

Then asked whether Nathaniel knew she was calling.

Adeline had lied and said yes.

She had not yet told him.

“Don’t say that number tonight,” Adeline warned Jasper. “Why?”

“Because I don’t know what it means yet.”

That was the last calm sentence either of them spoke before entering the Beverly Hills ballroom.

The charity gala was supposed to celebrate twenty-five years of the Albright Foundation. Crystal chandeliers. White roses. Champagne towers. A stage with Nathaniel’s name on the program. Hundreds of donors who believed the Albright family represented discipline, generosity, and continuity.

Jasper had grown up inside that mythology.

He knew where everyone sat. Which trustees hated each other. Which donors wanted photos with Nathaniel. Which guests Beatrice? No—there was no Beatrice here. Which guests treated his father like royalty.

But that night he noticed something different.

Sabrina wore Adeline’s wedding ring.

And Nathaniel had one arm around her waist.

Jasper felt the microphone in his hand grow heavy.

His mother whispered, “Not yet.”

May you like

Then Nathaniel kissed Sabrina in front of the room.

That was when waiting ended.
