Chapter 9 - THE BRACELET
The bracelet had belonged to Adeline’s grandmother, Eleanor Bennett. Not an Albright. A Bennett.
She co-founded a family charitable trust decades earlier, long before Adeline married Nathaniel.
The gold bracelet was not worth enough to matter financially in a sixty-eight-million-dollar investigation.
Emotionally, it mattered more than almost anything.
After the gala, Sabrina returned it through counsel.
She admitted taking it from Adeline’s wrist that night.
She also admitted she had first removed it from Adeline’s dressing table two days earlier, then put it back after Nathaniel told her she was being reckless.
At the gala, she took it again in anger. Why?
Because Adeline had called her a temporary embarrassment during a private confrontation.
Sabrina wanted to prove she was no longer temporary.
That did not make the act less cruel.
It made the cruelty understandable.
Then the appraisal file revealed something unexpected.
Eleanor Bennett’s trust documents contained a restriction stating that certain legacy charitable assets could never be pledged to secure private family business.
The bracelet itself was merely listed among personal property.
But the same schedule referenced an older endowment account now rolled into the Albright Foundation.
That endowment had contributed capital to one of the mission-investment pools Nathaniel later used for bridge structures.
The question became whether some of those funds were legally eligible for the investments at all.
Outside counsel said maybe not.
Nathaniel’s lawyers said the restriction had been superseded by later trust amendments.
The dispute required interpretation, not outrage.
Then Adeline noticed the bracelet clasp had been replaced. She asked when.
The jeweler’s record showed Sabrina had taken it for repair three months before the gala. How?
Nathaniel had authorized access to the family safe for an insurance inventory.
So Sabrina had handled the bracelet long before Adeline knew about the affair.
That fact wounded her in a different way.
Nathaniel had already been letting Sabrina inhabit private spaces while insisting there was nothing between them.
The bracelet did not prove theft. It proved intimacy.
Then Jasper found a notation in the same safe inventory.
Wedding ring removed for resizing. Authorized by Nathaniel.
There was no resizing.
The ring had been transferred to Sabrina.
