Chapter 18 - JASPER LEAVES THE FAMILY BUSINESS

Everyone assumed Jasper would eventually inherit the Albright empire.
He had been photographed at galas since he was eight.
Nathaniel took him to board lunches at fourteen.
Donors called him “the next generation.”
After the scandal, Jasper wanted nothing to do with the phrase.
He chose a college on the East Coast. Public policy. Economics. No family-office internship.
The foundation offered him a junior observer seat when he turned twenty-one. He declined. Adeline asked why.
“Because I don’t know anything yet.”
That answer made her proud.
Then Nathaniel offered him work at his private development company. Jasper declined again.
His father took it personally. At first. Then less.
Years of therapy had changed Nathaniel enough to recognize the pattern.
“You don’t owe me succession,” he said eventually. Jasper laughed. “No.”
Then Nathaniel apologized for the gala. Not the money. Not the affair.
The specific moment he reached for the microphone.
“I was trying to take your voice away because I couldn’t control what you were going to say.”
Jasper remembered knocking his hand aside.
He had replayed that moment for years, sometimes proudly. Then less proudly.
Physical confrontation could have escalated.
He told his father:
“I should have stepped back and let security handle you.” Nathaniel almost smiled. “Probably.”
Both could own something.
Then Jasper asked the question that had haunted him.
“Did you drug Mom?”
Nathaniel looked at him for a long time. “No.”
Jasper had no proof either way.
He chose not to pretend certainty.
That was maturity too. Then graduation.

Adeline wore the heirloom bracelet. Nathaniel attended separately. Sabrina did not.
Jasper walked across the stage under his own name. No foundation title. No heir label. Just Jasper. It felt light.
