Chapter 4 - ADELINE'S MEMORY
Adeline remembered the night before the hospital in pieces. Dinner at home. Nathaniel tense.
Sabrina had stopped by earlier with gala materials.
An argument about the foundation audit memo.
A glass of wine. Then dizziness. The walls bending.
Nathaniel telling her to sit down.
Then nothing until the emergency room.
Toxicology showed a prescription sedative.
Adeline had an old prescription for that medication from a back injury eighteen months earlier.
She had not taken it in months.
Someone had refilled it two days before her collapse.
The pharmacy account was tied to the Albright family medical plan.
Who picked it up?
The receipt showed a household courier authorization. Not a name.
Nathaniel denied drugging her.
Sabrina denied touching medication.
The house staff remembered Sabrina leaving before dinner.
No camera covered the kitchen. Jasper wanted certainty.
The detective assigned later refused to give him one.
“Suspicion is not proof.” That became important.
The financial case had documents.
The drugging question did not, at least not yet.
Adeline chose not to let one uncertain accusation contaminate everything else.
She told investigators exactly what she remembered. Nothing more.
Then the auditors showed her that the twelve-million-dollar transfer had been initiated using a reset version of her digital approval token.
Someone had reset the token while she was in the hospital.
The reset request came from Nathaniel’s executive assistant.
The assistant said Nathaniel ordered it.
Nathaniel said Adeline had verbally authorized emergency access before losing consciousness.
Adeline said she had not.
