Chapter 12 - THE WOMAN WHO SIGNED
Laura Kent had worked for the foundation nine years without disciplinary history.
That made her mistake more useful to understand.
She did not steal.
She did not receive money.
She did not know about Nathaniel and Sabrina.
She reset Adeline’s digital approval token because Nathaniel told her the foundation needed emergency continuity.
Then she created a temporary credential.
Policy required direct confirmation from Adeline or written authorization from two independent officers. Neither happened. Why?
Nathaniel said his wife was sedated and could not be disturbed.
That should have stopped the process.
Instead, it became the reason to bypass it. Laura said:
“I thought Mr. Albright was protecting her.”
Adeline closed her eyes.
That sentence followed her everywhere.
People protected her by removing her.
Then the token was used to approve the twelve-million transfer.
Laura did not know who clicked.
The audit log showed the token was accessed from a family-office workstation and later from a remote session.
The workstation user session belonged to CFO Michael Grant.
Michael said he believed the underlying conflict disclosure had already been approved by Adeline. It had not.
Then he admitted he should have checked. Why didn’t he?
Nathaniel said time was critical. Again. Urgency as authority.
Michael resigned before the final report. He later cooperated. No criminal mastermind.
A senior finance professional who let family pressure degrade his controls.
Then Laura turned over emails. One from Nathaniel:
Reset Adeline. She gave me verbal yes before meds kicked in.
Adeline said that conversation never happened. One from Michael:
Need conflict memo before funding. Nathaniel:
Paper it after. We lose the site tonight otherwise. There. Paper it after.
The sentence that summarized the entire financial scandal.
Then investigators found the conflict memo had indeed been created later.
Someone backdated the acknowledgment field. The document author: Michael Grant.
He admitted doing it at Nathaniel’s direction.
Now the false approval process had names. Laura reset access. Michael backfilled paperwork. Nathaniel ordered speed.
Adeline’s identity sat in the middle.
Sabrina had benefited indirectly, but on this transaction she had not participated. That mattered.
