Chapter 17 - ADELINE TAKES BACK HER NAME
Adeline did not take control of the Albright Foundation.
People expected her to. She refused.
She supported an independent board, an outside CEO, and stricter conflict rules.
Then she resigned from the ceremonial roles she had held because she was Nathaniel’s wife.
Professionally, she returned to Adeline Bennett.
Her legal name change took one hearing and a stack of paperwork.
Emotionally, it took years.
The ring came back through Sabrina’s lawyer.
Adeline placed it in a bank box.
Never wore it again.
The bracelet came back too.
She had the clasp repaired.
Then wore it once at Jasper’s high-school graduation.
Not because she had “won.”
Because the bracelet belonged to her grandmother before it belonged to this story. That mattered. Then the marriage. Divorce. Separate property. Joint property. No secret windfall.
Nathaniel had substantial wealth outside the foundation.
Adeline had her own assets and family trust. They negotiated.
Jasper, at eighteen, was legally an adult and not part of custody.
That simplified one thing.
Then Nathaniel tried to apologize during mediation. Adeline stopped him. “Not here.” Later, he wrote. She read. Did not respond.
At least not then.
Then Sabrina sent her own letter.
Adeline read that too.
The apology for the bracelet was specific.
The apology for the affair was complicated. Sabrina wrote:
I let myself believe your marriage was already dead because believing that made my choices easier. Adeline understood. Did not excuse.
Then she did something people around her found strange.
She refused to campaign for Sabrina’s destruction.
“She will answer for what she did,” Adeline said. “She does not need me to invent more.”
That became the way she rebuilt herself. Not soft. Precise.
Then the Albright mansion was sold two years later as part of Nathaniel’s private-company restructuring.
Adeline did not evict him.
The foundation did not own it.
There was no revenge deed.
The house simply became too expensive and too symbolic. Nathaniel moved.
