Chapter 1 - The Announcement That Split My Life In Two

I had boarded Tyler’s flight with our son as a surprise.

That had been Mason’s idea.

He was seven, wearing his navy hoodie, clutching his little toy airplane so tightly the plastic wings had left faint marks in his palm. He had been vibrating with excitement all morning because his father, Captain Tyler Cole, had no idea we were on board. We were supposed to meet him in Chicago later, but I’d changed the plan without telling him. I thought it would be romantic. I thought he would laugh, scoop Mason into his arms, and kiss me in front of half the first-class cabin.

Instead, the cabin speakers crackled overhead just as we reached row 2.

Tyler’s warm pilot voice filled the plane.

“Before we leave, I want to welcome my son Ethan in seat 2A.”

I stopped so suddenly that Mason bumped into my side.

My husband’s son?

Seat 2A was only a few feet away, and I saw a little blond boy sitting there near the window, swinging his feet and smiling toward the cockpit as if he already knew the voice speaking to him.

My mouth went dry.

Julia Grant, the senior flight attendant, was just stepping away from another first-class passenger with a glass in her hand when I moved toward her.

“Who is Ethan?” I asked.

She turned, saw my face, and immediately went rigid.

“Excuse me?”

I took another step. “You heard me. Who is Ethan?”

What happened next felt so fast that my mind couldn’t catch up.

Julia’s hand flashed out.

The slap exploded across my cheek.

Mason gasped behind me.

For a second I just stood there, stunned, my face burning, the entire bright first-class cabin going strangely quiet around us.

Then I turned slowly back toward her.

My voice came out lower than I expected.

“Why are you protecting my husband?”

Whatever righteous anger had been driving her evaporated instantly. She looked at me, really looked at me this time—my wedding ring, Mason behind me, his brown eyes so much like Tyler’s—and all the color drained from her face.

With shaking fingers, she reached into her pocket and pulled out a smartphone.

She unlocked it and turned the screen toward me.

There was Tyler.

Standing beside an airplane on a sunlit tarmac.

Julia stood close to him, smiling.

And between them was the little boy from seat 2A.

Mason whispered behind me, so softly it almost broke me more than the slap itself.

“Mom… Dad has another son?”

My knees nearly gave out.

Then Julia said the sentence that destroyed whatever was left of the morning.

“Tyler told me you both died three years ago.”

At that exact moment, Tyler’s voice began to come over the cabin speakers again.

And I realized I had not stepped onto that airplane to surprise my husband.

May you like

I had stepped onto it just in time to find out I had never known him at all.
