Chapter 13 - The First Time Mason Met Ethan

It happened months later, after the dust had settled enough for the adults to stop acting like every contact point would explode.
Julia asked gently whether I would ever consider a supervised meeting between the boys.
My first reaction was pain.
My second was honesty.
This was no longer about me alone.
Mason had a brother.
Ethan had a brother.
Tyler’s behavior did not erase that reality.
So we met at a quiet children’s museum on a Sunday morning.
Mason held my hand all the way from the parking lot to the entrance. Ethan arrived with Julia carrying a little backpack shaped like an airplane. That detail nearly sent me over the edge. Tyler’s shadow was still everywhere.
The boys looked at each other shyly at first.
Mason was older, protective already in that strange, instinctive way some children become after being hurt.
Ethan stayed close to Julia’s leg.
Then Mason reached into his pocket and pulled out the small toy airplane he had been holding the day our lives split in first class.
He looked at me for permission.
I nodded.
He held it out to Ethan.
“You can play with it,” he said. “But don’t break the wing. It’s old.”
Ethan took it carefully.
Julia put a hand over her mouth and started crying.
So did I, if I’m honest.
Not because the moment was perfect. It wasn’t.
It was awkward, tentative, and full of adult damage the boys could not possibly understand.
But it was real.
Unlike everything Tyler had built, this was real.
Two children, connected by blood and harmed by the same father, meeting not through competition, not through scandal, but through a choice the adults around them were finally making differently.
That day I understood something unexpected.
Tyler had created the wound.
May you like
But he did not get to decide what grew around it.
