Chapter 3 - Julia Wasn’t My Enemy

Airport security moved us off the aircraft and into a private airline office near the gate.

Tyler kept trying to speak to me on the walk there, but I didn’t answer. I held Mason’s hand the entire time. He had stopped asking questions, which was worse. Silence from a child can be louder than screaming.

Ethan had been taken by a customer-service manager and seated in another room with juice and crackers. I kept thinking of him—another innocent little boy caught inside Tyler’s lies. Mason had a half-brother, and neither of them had done anything to deserve the man who connected them.

Inside the office, Tyler finally tried to take control.

“This got twisted,” he said. “It’s not what it looks like.”

Julia laughed once, a jagged, broken sound.

“Not what it looks like?” she snapped. “Your dead wife is sitting right there.”

I turned to her.

For the first time, I saw not a rival, but another woman whose reality had just been shattered in a different direction than mine.

She was thirty-one, immaculate in her dark airline uniform, but she looked like she had aged five years in the past fifteen minutes.

“How long?” I asked her.

Julia closed her eyes briefly. “Almost three years.”

I inhaled sharply.

Three years.

Three full years of fake trips, fake overtime, fake schedule changes, late arrivals, and conveniently exhausted returns home.

“And Ethan?” I asked.

Her voice softened when she answered. “He just turned two.”

Tyler looked toward the floor.

My stomach dropped.

Mason looked up at me with wide eyes, and I knew he understood enough to know that “another son” was not a metaphor.

Julia reached into her bag again and pulled out more than just the photo this time—hotel receipts, a birthday snapshot, a little folded card in Tyler’s handwriting that said Proud of my boy. Love, Dad.

“I thought I was protecting a widower,” she said, looking straight at me. “I thought you and your son were gone.”

I believed her.

Not because she had slapped me and deserved mercy. Not because I was generous.

Because her horror was too raw to fake.

Tyler had not just betrayed me.

May you like

He had built a second family on top of my supposed grave.
