Chapter 7 - He Tried To Turn His Betrayal Into A Mistake

For the next hour, Tyler did what weak men often do when their choices finally stand in daylight.
He called a strategy a mistake.
He called a pattern confusion.
He called stealing from me “borrowing from household funds.”
He said he always intended to pay it back.
He said he loved Mason.
He said he never meant to hurt Ethan either.
He said Julia had pressured him to define the future.
He said he had felt trapped.
That last word almost sent me into another dimension of rage.
Trapped?
He had a wife, a son, a home, a career, and my trust.
The only trap in the room was the one he built for everyone else.
When I asked whether he had ever told Julia he was going to leave her and Ethan, he didn’t answer directly.
When I asked whether he had ever told me he was thinking of leaving us, he looked down.
So that was it.
He wanted not one family or the other.
He wanted the emotional security of both, financed partly by me, with the truth split neatly between state lines.
Then he made the worst mistake of the night.
He said, “Please don’t do something that ruins my career.”
Not “our son.”
Not “the damage I’ve done.”
His career.
I stood up.
“You announced another child over an aircraft speaker while your wife and actual son were ten feet away,” I said. “You ruined your own career.”
I told him to leave.
At the doorway he turned back once and said, “I never stopped loving you.”
That was the moment I finally understood something that changed me.
Love, by itself, is morally worthless if a person is willing to lie, steal, and humiliate you in its name.
I closed the door in his face.
Then I sat on the floor and cried until Mason came downstairs, climbed into my lap, and whispered, “Is Dad gone?”
“For tonight,” I said.
May you like
And for the first time, I knew tonight was only the beginning.
