Chapter 13 - Margaret’s Greatest Fear Was Becoming Unnecessary

Therapy did not transform Margaret quickly.

At first she attended because Robert said their marriage would not continue otherwise.

She spent the first sessions blaming Claire.

Then Ethan.

Then modern families.

Eventually the therapist asked:

“What happens if Ethan has a happy life that does not revolve around you?”

Margaret answered immediately:

“Then I’ve failed.”

The room went quiet.

That was the center of it.

Margaret had spent decades defining good motherhood as permanent necessity.

If Ethan no longer needed her approval—

she felt discarded.

If he prioritized Claire—

she felt replaced.

If the extended family arranged plans without her—

she felt invisible.

None of that excused manipulation.

But it made the pattern understandable.

Margaret had been fighting against irrelevance.

And Claire had become the face she gave that fear.
