Chapter 14 - Claire Stopped Auditioning for the Whitmores
The biggest change happened inside Claire.
She stopped proving herself.
When there was a family brunch she didn’t want to attend, she said:
“No, thank you.”
No essay.
No explanation.
When Margaret complained that Claire rarely called, Claire answered:
“You can call me too.”
When an aunt asked why Claire had “kept Ethan away” for years, Claire calmly sent her the actual email thread.
Not to humiliate Margaret.
To correct the record.
Some relatives apologized.
A few didn’t.
Claire stopped needing all of them to understand.
That was new.
For years, she believed belonging required unanimous approval.
