Chapter 6 - Margaret Had Been Sending Ethan Cropped Messages
Ethan’s turn came next.
Margaret frequently sent him screenshots.
Messages supposedly showing Claire insulting his family.
One example appeared after an argument about Sunday dinners.
Claire’s original message to Margaret had been:
I can’t keep doing every Sunday at your house because Ethan and I barely get one full day together anymore. Could we make it twice a month instead?
The screenshot Margaret sent Ethan began halfway through.
I can’t keep doing every Sunday at your house...
Then skipped ahead to:
...twice a month instead.
The explanation about wanting time with Ethan was gone.
Margaret added:
See what I deal with?
Ethan remembered confronting Claire afterward.
“Why do you hate being around my family?”
Claire had been bewildered.
“I don’t.”
They argued for hours.
Neither knew Margaret had changed the context.
Claire looked at Ethan now.
“You believed her.”
His face tightened.
“Yes.”
“Even when I told you I didn’t say what she claimed?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Ethan looked down.
“Because she was my mother.”
Claire nodded slowly.
That answer hurt.
