Chapter 5 - Claire Had Been Blamed for Decisions She Never Made
The records were painfully ordinary.
That made them more convincing.
There was no elaborate conspiracy.
No forged legal documents.
No secret fortune.
Just years of small manipulations.
Margaret declined invitations on Claire’s behalf.
Changed dinner times without telling her.
Told relatives Claire preferred not to receive visitors after giving birth.
Claimed Claire disliked Ethan’s cousins.
Once told Ethan:
“Claire said your father makes her uncomfortable.”
Claire had never said that.
She had actually asked Robert to join them for dinner more often.
But Robert remembered how he stopped visiting afterward.
He thought he was respecting her boundary.
Claire thought he had become distant.
Both blamed themselves.
Margaret stood between them—
translating one person to the other.
Badly.
Deliberately.
Ethan looked sick as Robert laid out the messages.
“How long have you known?”
“Two months.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I wanted to know how much was misunderstanding and how much was intentional.”
Margaret snapped:
“And now you think you’re some detective?”
Robert looked at her.
“No. I think I was a husband who trusted his wife to speak honestly for the family.”
