Chapter 4 - Margaret Controlled the Family Calendar
For decades, Margaret managed nearly every Whitmore gathering.
Birthdays.
Anniversaries.
Christmas dinners.
Summer weekends.
She used a shared family email address Robert had created years earlier when their children were still in college.
Everyone trusted it.
That trust gave Margaret something nobody noticed:
Control over communication.
Three years earlier, Ethan’s sister Katherine invited Claire and Ethan to her daughter’s baptism.
Claire never received the invitation.
Margaret later told Katherine:
“Claire thinks church events are old-fashioned.”
Claire had never said that.
A year later, Robert’s brother invited the family to Maine.
Margaret told Ethan the trip had been canceled.
It hadn’t.
When photos appeared online, Margaret claimed the invitation had been last-minute and there had not been room for them.
Again—
false.
Robert only discovered the pattern when his brother called him directly months later.
“Why do Ethan and Claire never come anymore?”
Robert answered:
“They’re busy.”
His brother said:
“Margaret keeps telling us Claire doesn’t want anything to do with us.”
That sentence stayed with Robert.
So he opened the shared email account.
Not just the inbox.
The sent folder.
The archive.
The deleted messages.
