Chapter 8 - Margaret Finally Said What She Really Believed
Confronted with the notebook, Margaret stopped denying.
Instead, she justified.
“I kept this family together for forty years.”
Robert answered:
“You controlled the calendar.”
“I created traditions.”
“You decided who was included.”
“Because nobody else cared enough!”
Ethan shook his head.
“That isn’t true.”
Margaret turned on him.
“You have no idea what families become when mothers stop holding them together.”
Claire spoke quietly.
“Families aren’t supposed to require one person controlling everyone.”
Margaret looked at her with open contempt.
“There. That. You always needed to dismantle everything.”
Claire blinked.
“By asking for two Sundays a month with my husband?”
“By teaching him that every family obligation was negotiable.”
Ethan stared at his mother.
“They are negotiable.”
Margaret froze.
That sentence came from Ethan.
