Chapter 10 - Celeste Admitted She Wanted Graham to Send Evelyn Away

There was another layer.

Celeste did not only want Mom disbelieved.

She wanted me to remove her from our family home.

She had already researched two long-term care facilities.

One specialized in memory care.

She sent me links.

“Just in case.”

She recommended an evaluation for decision-making capacity.

She suggested I begin managing Mom’s finances more aggressively.

Not because Celeste was trying to steal those assets.

There was no secret inheritance scheme.

The motive was more personal.

She wanted Evelyn to lose autonomy.

Exactly what Celeste believed Evelyn had stolen from Denise.

“You wanted me to put my mother somewhere she didn’t need to be?”

Celeste stared at the table.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“So she’d know what it feels like.”

“What what feels like?”

“To tell the truth and have everyone think you’re crazy.”

I sat back.

For the first time, I understood the cruelty completely.

It wasn’t about money.

Celeste wanted an emotional reenactment.

Her mother’s downfall reversed.

Evelyn powerless.

Celeste in control.

Me playing the role of the family member who stopped believing her.

And I had almost performed exactly as she planned.
