Chapter 14 - Celeste Finally Said Her Mother’s Name Without Defending Her

Months passed before Celeste gave a full statement.
By then, the evidence was overwhelming.
Hospital residue testing.
Medication discrepancies.
Care notes.
Old case records.
Her own searches for memory-care placement.
Messages in which she told a friend:
She’ll know what it’s like when her own son stops believing her.
That message destroyed any remaining claim that the medication problems were mistakes.
During the final recorded interview I attended, Celeste cried quietly.
Then said:
“My mother did it.”
Nobody spoke.
She continued.
“She did what Evelyn said she did.”
It sounded like grief.
Because it was.
Accepting the truth did not mean Celeste stopped loving Denise.
It meant she finally separated love from innocence.
Then she looked at my mother.
“I spent my whole life thinking you destroyed her.”
Mom answered:
“No. Your mother made choices. Then I made sure my mother was protected.”
Celeste nodded.
“I became her.”
Mom shook her head.
“No. You repeated some of her choices. What you become next is still yours.”
That was more mercy than I would have offered.
May you like
Maybe that was why it mattered.
