Chapter 6 - Celeste Repeated Her Mother’s Exact Method

The irony was grotesque.

Celeste believed she was avenging Denise.

Instead, she copied the behavior that had led to Denise’s conviction.

Mom’s prescribed medication included an occasional nighttime sedative.

Celeste controlled the pill organizer during her shifts.

She began moving doses.

Sometimes withholding the nighttime tablet.

Sometimes introducing it earlier in the day.

Sometimes crushing medication into juice or applesauce.

Never enough to create an obvious overdose.

Enough to make Mom sleepy.

Unsteady.

Forgetful.

The goal was not immediate physical harm.

The goal was a pattern.

Then Celeste documented the symptoms she had helped create.

11:15 a.m. — Evelyn confused about day.

2:40 p.m. — unusually drowsy.

5:05 p.m. — accused caregiver of moving medication.

Every line looked professional.

Every line became stronger because it came from the person causing the problem.

Mom knew something was wrong.

But the more she accused Celeste, the more Celeste wrote down:

Paranoid ideation increasing.

It was elegant in the ugliest sense.

A closed loop.

Drug the woman.

Record the effects.

Use her accusations about the drugging as additional proof she is losing her mind.
