Chapter 13 - Graham Changed How Care Worked Around Evelyn
When Mom went home, there was no single caregiver controlling information anymore.
That was the first change.
Medication stayed in pharmacy-prepared packaging.
Changes required direct documentation.
Mom had access to her own records.
I had access too.
No caregiver became the exclusive translator of what Mom said, ate, remembered, or refused.
And most importantly:
Mom chose who helped her.
Not me.
She interviewed candidates herself.
The first woman lasted twenty minutes.
Mom disliked her.
I asked why.
“She talks to me like I’m a Labrador.”
We both laughed.
The second candidate was better.
The third, Janice, was a retired rehabilitation aide who asked Mom:
“What do you actually want help with?”
Mom answered:
“Carrying laundry downstairs and reaching ridiculous shelves my son insists on using.”
Janice got the job.
That question changed everything.
Care was supposed to increase Mom’s control.
