Chapter 9 - The Old Case File Proved Denise Was Guilty
Celeste’s entire revenge depended on one belief.
That my mother had destroyed an innocent woman.
So my attorney obtained the old case file.
It was thicker than Celeste expected.
Denise Halpern had not been convicted solely because Evelyn accused her.
There were canceled checks bearing forged signatures.
Pawn records linked to Margaret’s missing jewelry.
Pharmacy discrepancies.
Testimony from another caregiver.
A recorded statement in which Denise eventually admitted giving Margaret extra sedating medication so the older woman would sleep while Denise searched the house.
The evidence was overwhelming.
Celeste read only part of the file before putting it down.
“She told me she never touched her medication.”
Mom sat across from her during the supervised interview.
“She lied to you.”
Celeste’s eyes filled.
“She said you hated her.”
“I hated what she did to my mother.”
“That’s not the same thing.”
“No.”
Celeste looked almost offended by the simplicity of the answer.
Her entire identity had been built around inherited injustice.
Now she had to face something more painful.
Her mother had loved her.
Her mother had also committed crimes.
Both could be true.
And revenge had not corrected Denise’s history.
