Chapter 5 - Celeste Grew Up With a Different Version of the Story

Children inherit stories before they inherit evidence.
Celeste’s version was simple.
Her mother had been an underpaid caregiver exploited by a wealthy family.
Evelyn disliked her.
Money went missing.
Evelyn blamed the easiest person.
Denise went to court without resources.
The rich family won.
Her mother never recovered professionally.
Years later, Denise died from an overdose after struggling with addiction.
Celeste spent most of her life believing one woman had destroyed everything.
Evelyn.
That belief hardened instead of fading.
Celeste became a caregiver herself.
Partly, she later admitted, because she wanted to prove her mother had not been what people said.
Then one day she saw my name attached to a private-care request circulated through an agency network.
Graham Mercer.
She recognized the surname.
Checked my public profile.
Found a photograph of my mother.
Evelyn.
The woman she had been taught to hate.
Celeste requested the assignment.
She used her married surname.
Nothing about the application was technically false.
She simply omitted the connection nobody thought to ask about.
She did not enter our home planning to kill my mother.
What she planned was, in some ways, more deliberate.
She wanted Evelyn to experience what Denise had supposedly experienced.
To be called unreliable.
Paranoid.
Confused.
To speak the truth and watch everyone dismiss it.
May you like
Including her own son.
