Chapter 12 - Grant Ended the Engagement Before the Board Meeting

Grant met Vanessa privately.

I was not there.

I learned the details later only because he told the board what was relevant.

He asked her:

“Why did you lie about Evelyn?”

Vanessa apparently answered:

“Because you would have looked at her differently.”

Grant said:

“That’s not an answer.”

“It is the answer.”

She knew what Keystone meant to him.

She knew he had searched for the officer behind that call sign.

She had heard the story throughout their relationship.

And she deliberately kept my identity from him.

Not because she feared romance.

Nothing like that existed.

She feared credibility.

If Grant knew I was Keystone, he would never accept her claim that I was a pampered founder’s daughter pretending to understand veterans.

Grant removed his engagement ring that evening.

He also withdrew from the advisory role Vanessa had arranged for him.

The next morning, he appeared before the clinic board not as her fiancé—

but as a veteran who had been used to validate a transaction without receiving truthful information.

That changed the room.
