Chapter 9 - Dad Had Left One Warning About Selling the Clinic
Our father did not leave a secret will changing everything.
He did not hide a magical document giving me control.
He left something more useful.
A letter.
Both Vanessa and I received copies after his death.
I had not reread mine in years.
That week, I did.
Dad wrote:
If one of you ever wants to sell and the other refuses, neither of you should assume the refusal is irrational. Force yourselves to explain what the other sees that you do not.
Then:
Vanessa sees whether the institution can survive financially. Evelyn sees whether surviving financially is still the same as fulfilling its purpose. You will need both questions.
That was why he divided ownership equally.
Not because he expected us always to agree.
Because he expected disagreement to protect the clinic from extremes.
Vanessa had stopped seeing my refusal as part of governance.
She saw it as disobedience.
So instead of convincing me the ValorBridge deal was good—
she tried to remove me from the decision.
That was the real betrayal.
Not that she wanted a sale.
Reasonable people could debate a sale.
