Chapter 6 - Vanessa Had Been Telling Everyone I Was Unfit to Control the Clinic

Once I understood the folder, her lies about my service stopped looking petty.

They were strategic.

ValorBridge had one concern.

Me.

Their internal notes described me as:

mission-oriented minority obstruction risk.

Minority.

That was interesting.

I owned fifty percent.

Someone had been describing me as less important than I legally was.

The buyer had also been told I rarely participated in operations and lacked professional connection to veterans beyond being the founder’s daughter.

That came from Vanessa.

She had spent nearly a year creating an image of me as a sheltered sibling who inherited authority she had never earned.

Grant became useful to that narrative.

A decorated combat veteran.

Publicly respected.

Comfortable speaking to veterans’ groups.

Vanessa planned to marry him and place him on the clinic’s new Veterans Advisory Council.

Her argument became simple:

Why trust Evelyn, who “never served,” when Vanessa’s future husband actually had?

I finally understood why she attacked the pin the instant Grant was present.

It was not merely sibling contempt.

It was evidence that could destroy the story she had sold both him and the buyer.

And it did.
