Chapter 1 - The Ring Beside Mia’s Brace

The diamond ring hit the marble floor at almost the same moment my daughter dropped to one knee.

Clink.

That tiny sound would eventually destroy two people’s lies.

But in that instant, all I saw was Mia.

My seven-year-old daughter was crying in the dining room of my family’s mansion, one white orthopedic brace strapped around her lower leg. She wore a cream floral dress, and tears covered her small face.

Elena stood over her.

Thirty-five.

Blonde.

Champagne-colored evening gown.

Diamonds everywhere.

And absolutely no remorse.

I had entered just in time to see Elena step toward Mia and kick her braced lower leg.

Once.

Hard.

“STOP PLAYING THE VICTIM!”

Mia recoiled and safely dropped to one knee.

The brace protected her injured leg from serious harm, but the humiliation and fear were immediate.

And during that kick, one diamond ring slipped from Elena’s hand and landed beside the white brace.

I ran.

“Mia!”

I bent down, scooped my daughter securely into one arm, and held her against me.

She immediately wrapped her arms around my shoulder.

“I’ve got you.”

She was crying too hard to speak.

Then I saw the ring.

Still lying on the marble.

With my free hand, I picked it up.

For one second, I thought it was simply another expensive piece of jewelry from Elena’s endless collection.

Then I turned it between my fingers.

Something about the setting bothered me.

Familiar.

Too familiar.

“Why was this beside her brace?”

Elena’s expression tightened.

Mia clung harder.

I carried my daughter away from the immediate confrontation and placed her safely near the entrance to the adjoining lounge, where she remained away from what happened next.

Then Cole stepped forward.

Elena’s husband.

Thirty-eight years old.

Dark suit.

Angry before I had even accused anyone of anything.

“PUT THAT RING DOWN!”

His reaction changed everything.

He rushed toward me.

I reacted.

One right-handed punch.

Hard.

Cole crashed backward into the gold luggage cart.

The cart tipped with him.

No second punch.

Then Elena charged.

I turned.

One open-palmed slap struck her face.

She spun sideways, hit the ornate wooden cabinet, and dropped to the floor.

No second slap.

No further attack.

The room became silent.

Cole lay beside the overturned cart.

Elena looked up at me in stunned disbelief.

Mia was crying safely away from us.

And I still held the ring.

I walked toward Elena.

Slowly this time.

I crouched enough to bring the diamond directly into her line of sight.

“NOW TELL ME THE TRUTH.”

Extreme fear replaced every trace of arrogance in her face.

Her eyes widened.

She said nothing.

I looked down at the ring again.

And then I finally saw what had bothered me.

Inside the platinum band was a tiny engraving.

Two letters.

V + L

My stomach dropped.

Because the ring Elena had just lost while kicking my daughter was not Elena’s ring.

It had belonged to Mia’s dead mother.

May you like

And it was supposed to have been locked inside a bank vault for the past four years.
