Chapter 11 - I Had To Apologize To Mia For Believing Adults Over Her

The hardest conversation was not with Cole.

Or Elena.

It was with my daughter.

We sat together in Laura’s old reading room.

Mia’s brace rested on a pillow.

I said:

“I need to tell you something.”

She looked worried immediately.

“Am I in trouble?”

That question hurt.

“No.”

“Then what?”

“I didn’t listen carefully enough when you told me about Mommy’s ring.”

She looked down.

“You said Elena probably had one like it.”

“I know.”

“She said that too.”

“I know.”

“Why did you believe her?”

There was no perfect answer.

So I gave her the true one.

“Because she was an adult and sounded confident.”

Mia frowned.

“That’s dumb.”

“Yes.”

Her eyes widened.

“You can say you were dumb?”

“In this case? Absolutely.”

That got a tiny smile.

Then I said:

“I don’t have to believe every detail immediately just because someone tells me something. But I should listen. And check.”

Mia nodded.

“Even kids?”

“Especially when kids are scared.”

She thought.

Then asked:

“What if I’m wrong?”

“Then we figure that out too.”

That became our rule.

Listen first. Check next.

Not blind belief.

Not automatic doubt.

May you like

Something better.
