Chapter 7 - Elena Had Changed The Ring Slightly To Hide It

A jeweler confirmed the ring beyond any reasonable doubt.

Laura’s appraisal included the diamond’s laser-inscribed laboratory number.

It matched.

The inside engraving matched.

Even a tiny repair beneath one prong matched a photograph from eleven years earlier.

But Elena had altered it.

The original band had a brushed platinum finish.

Elena had it polished.

She also added two small side diamonds.

Enough to make the ring look different at a glance.

Not enough to erase its identity.

The jeweler found the modification invoice.

Customer:

Elena Mercer.

Date:

Eleven months earlier.

She had not accidentally worn Laura’s ring.

She had paid to disguise it.

That changed the case substantially.
