Chapter 3 - Cole Had Been The One Person I Trusted With Laura’s Estate

Cole was my half-brother.

Same father.

Fourteen years younger.

Our relationship had always been complicated by the age difference.

I was practically grown when he started elementary school.

Still, after our father died, we became closer.

And when Laura got sick, Cole was everywhere.

Hospital rides.

Meals.

School pickup.

Insurance calls.

He even sat beside me during the meeting where Laura’s estate plan was finalized.

After she died, I could barely function.

That was when Cole offered to help catalog her belongings.

I accepted.

One of my worst decisions.

Laura’s jewelry trust had two administrative contacts:

Me.

And Cole.

Not because he owned anything.

He didn’t.

But because I wanted another family member able to access documentation if something happened to me before Mia reached adulthood.

Cole could view inventory.

Coordinate insurance.

Access the bank vault only under limited procedures.

He could not legally take anything for personal use.

But he knew where everything was.

And now his wife had one of Laura’s rings on her hand.

The moment Cole shouted—

PUT THAT RING DOWN!

—he told me more than he intended.

An innocent man would have asked:

“What ring?”

May you like

Cole knew exactly which ring I held.
