Chapter 1 - The Wrong Pill

The grand dining room of the luxury American mansion was an impenetrable fortress of dark, cinematic power. Crystal chandeliers cast a heavy, warm glow over the polished black marble table. Outside the massive floor-to-ceiling windows, a brutal rainstorm battered the dark city.

At the head of the table sat Alessandro. He was a fiercely handsome, deeply feared thirty-eight-year-old mafia boss wearing a light tan three-piece suit with a brown tie. He looked exhausted. He had been suffering from severe, unexplained migraines and heart palpitations for months.

Standing rigidly behind him was Victor, his most trusted bodyguard and oldest friend. Victor was a fifty-something man with graying dark hair, wearing a sharp navy blue suit.

Alessandro let out a heavy sigh, reaching for a small white pill resting next to his crystal water glass. It was his daily heart medication, personally retrieved from the pharmacy by Victor every single week.

Alessandro slowly brought the white pill to his lips.

Suddenly, a tiny hand aggressively grabbed his wrist, completely stopping him.

It was little Sophia, his five-year-old niece. She wore a pale blue dress with embroidered flowers and a white bow in her dark curls. She was clutching a worn teddy bear in her other hand.

Sophia didn't let go of his wrist. She looked dead into the eyes of the most terrifying man in the city.
