Chapter 4 - The Snake Ring

The heavy, suffocating silence in the hallway was dripping with cinematic realism.

Lily nodded frantically, her brown hair falling over her tear-streaked face.

"I heard a man talking on a radio in the dark," Lily whispered fearfully, completely unaware of the massive, earth-shattering betrayal she was about to expose to the city's most dangerous man.

Before Lily could finish her sentence, heavy footsteps echoed from the far end of the hallway.

A wide cinematic shot captured the intense composition. In the background, Victor Hale, Dominic's imposing, forty-something Chief of Security, was walking toward the study. He wore a sharp black suit. He was Dominic’s oldest friend and the most trusted man in the entire syndicate.

As Victor approached, he rested his hand casually against the lapel of his suit jacket.

Gleaming unmistakably in the dim, late-night lighting was a highly distinct, heavy silver snake ring on Victor’s index finger.

Maria, Lily’s mother, was rushing down the hallway right behind Victor. She wore a simple winter coat over her nightgown, looking absolutely terrified that her daughter had wandered away.

Dominic kept his body perfectly still, shielding Lily from the approaching men. He looked back down at the trembling little girl.
