Chapter 6 - The Checkmate

Dominic didn't yell. He didn't accuse Victor of treason.
He smoothly placed a protective hand on Lily’s small shoulder and gently pushed the little girl back into the safety of his mahogany study. He stepped fully out into the hallway, closing the heavy doors behind him with a definitive, echoing click.
"Everything is fine, Victor," Dominic replied, his voice chillingly calm, echoing violently over the sound of the rain hitting the windows.
Maria rushed forward, absolutely panicked. "I'm so sorry, Mr. Rossi! I'll take her right back to bed!"
"No, Maria," Dominic commanded flawlessly, holding his hand up to stop the mother. "You and Lily are going to stay in my study for the next hour. It's the safest room in the house."
Victor frowned, deeply confused by the sudden change in protocol. A drop of cold sweat rolled down the traitor’s temple. "Boss? Safe from what? The perimeter is entirely secure."
"Is it?" Dominic asked lethally, taking a slow, calculated step toward his Chief of Security.
Dominic didn't reach for a gun. He reached into his suit jacket and pulled out a heavy, encrypted remote detonator. It was the fail-safe trigger for the underground escape passage. If the tunnel was ever compromised by a rival cartel, the detonator would completely collapse the heavily reinforced concrete walls, burying whoever was inside alive.
