Chapter 2 - The Devastating Question

The cinematic tension in the grand ballroom was absolutely suffocating. The elite guests murmured in hushed, judgmental tones, watching the billionaire play what they assumed was a cruel, arrogant parlor trick on a poverty-stricken child.
Charles confidently kept his open hand extended. He didn't blink. He waited.
Annie looked up at the towering man in the black tuxedo. She didn't look afraid, only deeply observant.
Lena glared defensively at the billionaire, her realistic micro-expressions shifting from sheer panic to a fierce, unyielding maternal rage. She instinctively positioned her body to protect her child, her knuckles turning white as she gripped Annie's tiny fingers.
"I don't know how to dance," Annie said softly, her innocent voice breaking the heavy silence.
Charles completely ignored the murmuring crowd and the furious waitress. He locked his intense, dark eyes entirely onto the little girl.
"You were counting the beats," Charles replied smoothly, his tone shifting from arrogant to profoundly curious.
Lena stepped forward, completely shielding Annie with her long black skirt. She confronted the most dangerous, powerful man in the room with absolutely zero fear.
"My daughter is not a prize," Lena stated, her voice cold, defiant, and vibrating with an unstoppable maternal fury.
But before Lena could drag her away, Annie gently pulled back. She looked up at Charles, her tiny brow furrowed in serious, heavy concentration. She softly squeezed her mother's trembling hand.
"If I dance," Annie asked, her voice innocent, fragile, and utterly heartbreaking, "do I have to leave my Mama?"
