Chapter 3 - The Ghost from the Past

The heavy crystal tumbler in Charles’s hand slipped from his grip, crashing against the polished marble floor and shattering into fragments.
He didn't even notice the broken glass. His chest heaved as he struggled to catch his breath. His dark eyes darted from the six-year-old girl’s face to the fierce, protective waitress standing in front of her.
For the first time all evening, Charles truly looked at Lena.
Beneath the messy dark updo, the cheap white collared shirt, and the exhausted lines on her face, he recognized her. The cinematic realization crashed over him with the force of a nuclear bomb.
Seven years ago, Lena had been the love of his life. She was an art student, entirely outside of his wealthy, cutthroat world. They had shared a secret, passionate romance that Charles had desperately wanted to turn into a marriage. But one night, she vanished without a single trace, leaving behind a cruel note claiming she had taken a million-dollar payoff from his family to walk away.
Charles had turned his agonizing grief into cold, ruthless ambition, becoming a billionaire who trusted absolutely no one.
But looking at Annie—the exact shape of her jaw, the specific shade of her brown hair, and the dark, intense eyes that perfectly mirrored his own—he realized the horrifying truth.
Annie wasn't just a random child counting the beats to the music. She was his daughter.
"Lena?" Charles breathed, his voice cracking with a decade of repressed agony. "You... you're alive?"
Before Lena could answer, the heavy, aggressive clicking of designer high heels echoed across the marble floor.
Walking furiously into the center of the room was Vanessa, Charles’s current fiancée. She wore a plunging, blood-red evening gown dripping in diamonds, her flawless face twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated disgust.
