Chapter 9 - The Rightful Family

The chaotic, frantic energy completely evaporated from the opulent ballroom. The wealthy guests stood in stunned silence, entirely frozen by the explosive drama they had just witnessed.

Charles didn't care about the guests. He didn't care about his billionaire status. He let out a long, shuddering breath, the heavy, agonizing weight of seven years of grief finally lifting from his shoulders.

He turned around and walked slowly toward Lena and Annie.

Lena was crying, but they weren't tears of fear anymore. They were tears of pure, unadulterated relief. She had carried the terrifying weight of hiding from a monster for seven years, and in a single night, the father of her child had destroyed the monster completely.

Charles ignored his expensive tuxedo. He completely bypassed the arrogance of his wealth and dropped to both knees on the marble floor, right in front of the six-year-old girl in the faded blue dress.

"Annie," Charles whispered, his voice thick with genuine, overwhelming emotion. "I am so incredibly sorry that I wasn't there to protect you. I didn't know."

Annie looked at him with wide, innocent brown eyes. She slowly let go of her mother's skirt and took a tentative step forward.

"Are you really my daddy?" Annie asked softly.

Charles choked on a sob, genuine tears falling freely from his dark eyes. "I am, sweetheart. I'm your daddy. And I am never, ever going to let anyone hurt you or your mama again."

Annie didn't hesitate. She threw her tiny arms around his neck, hugging him with a fierce, unconditional love that only a child could offer. Charles wrapped his strong arms around her, pulling her into a desperate, unbreakable embrace, burying his face in her long brown hair.

He reached out his hand, looking up at Lena with a desperate, pleading gaze.

Lena stepped forward, completely discarding her serving tray, and collapsed into his arms. The three of them held each other on the floor of the ballroom, completely oblivious to the elite crowd watching them.
