Chapter 2 - The Silent Prisoner

To understand the absolute, volcanic tension in that room, you had to understand the quiet tragedy unfolding for the past three months.

My name is Lina. I am a twenty-four-year-old nursing student, working night shifts as a waitress at The Obsidian Room to pay off my immense medical school loans. Because of my training, I am trained to notice the smallest micro-expressions, the subtle changes in breathing, and the physical decline of a patient.

Margaret was a regular at our restaurant. She was Garrett’s mother. Before Madison entered the picture, Margaret had been a vibrant, sharp, and incredibly kind woman who always asked about my studies.

But ever since Garrett proposed to Madison, Margaret had rapidly deteriorated.

She became fragile, quiet, and completely terrified. Her hands shook violently whenever Madison stood too close. She lost weight. Her eyes were constantly darting around the room, begging for a rescue that never came.

Garrett was the ruthless CEO of a massive tech empire. He worked eighty-hour weeks and traveled constantly. He loved his mother deeply, but Madison played the role of the devoted, caring future daughter-in-law flawlessly whenever he was in the room. She isolated Margaret, claiming the elderly woman was suffering from early-onset dementia and needed "specialized, private care."
