Chapter 5 - The Hidden Letter

The silence in the glittering dining room was deafening.

Dominic didn't let go of Marco’s throat. He slowly turned his head to look at Mara, who was hyperventilating, still clutching the giggling baby Nico to her chest.

"Mara," Dominic asked, his voice instantly dropping to a soft, almost pleading tone. "Did your mother leave anything else for me?"

Mara nodded, tears spilling down her soft, nervous face. With trembling fingers, she reached into the pocket of her white lace apron. She pulled out a heavily worn, sealed envelope that bore the exact same dragon and rose crest stamped in red wax.

"She told me to find you," Mara wept. "She said if I ever showed this to the man named Marco, he would kill me. Because he was the one who wired the bomb under her car twenty-five years ago to steal my grandfather's money."

Marco thrashed violently against the table. "She's lying! She's a filthy peasant!"

One of the bodyguards stepped forward, took the letter from Mara, and handed it to Dominic.

Dominic tore open the seal with one hand while holding Marco down with the other. His eyes scanned his late sister's familiar handwriting. The letter detailed everything—how Marco had betrayed the family, how Elena had faked her death to protect her unborn daughter from the corrupt syndicate, and how she had lived in poverty for two decades just to keep Mara safe.

But the final paragraph of the letter made Dominic’s blood turn to absolute ice.
